Safeguarding and governance assurance for AI use in schools, colleges and MATs

AI is already changing school practice. Can you evidence how it is governed?

Staff and pupils are already using AI tools, often faster than policies, approvals, training and governor oversight can keep up. The question is not just whether AI is present, but whether the school can explain its use, show its controls and evidence what happens next.

Why now: KCSIE 2026

Under Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026, governing bodies and proprietors are responsible for appropriate online-safety arrangements, including filtering and monitoring. KCSIE 2026 also points schools to government guidance on using generative AI safely.

AI Compass 4 Schools turns that context into six practical dimensions so leaders can see their position, gaps and evidence needs.

Review the official sources

How the problem shows up

AI governance gaps rarely arrive as one obvious problem.

They appear as disconnected decisions, uneven practice and missing evidence across leadership, safeguarding, technology, teaching and governance.

01

Staff and pupils may be using AI tools that have not been consistently identified or approved.

02

Filtering and monitoring may not have been reviewed against new generative AI uses and limitations.

03

Policies may mention online safety but not set practical expectations for staff or pupil AI use.

04

Training may be informal, inconsistent or hard to evidence to governors and trustees.

05

Pupil safety, literacy and inclusion may be handled differently across classrooms, subjects or schools.

06

Leaders may know activity is happening but lack a joined-up record of ownership, decisions, actions and review dates.

The six governance dimensions

Establish a clear position across six connected dimensions.

Move from scattered activity to an explainable position: what is happening, what is controlled, what evidence exists, what is missing and who owns the next action.

DIMENSION 1

AI Tool Awareness and Approval

Which AI tools and use cases are active, and who approved them?

What it tests
Whether use, ownership and approval are visible.
What the school needs to show
A maintained record of tools and uses, with ownership, approval and review.
DIMENSION 2

Filtering, Monitoring and Technical Safeguards

Do filtering, monitoring and technical safeguards account for generative AI?

What it tests
Controls, limitations, responsibility and review.
What the school needs to show
How safeguards have been reviewed, including limitations and ownership.
DIMENSION 3

Policy, Practice and Documentation

Are expectations for AI use documented and reflected in everyday practice?

What it tests
Whether expectations are approved, communicated and used.
What the school needs to show
Approved expectations, documented, communicated and used day to day.
DIMENSION 4

Staff Capability and Training

Do staff understand the expectations, and can the school evidence training?

What it tests
Guidance, capability and recorded development.
What the school needs to show
Clear staff expectations, relevant development and reviewable records.
DIMENSION 5

Pupil Safety, Literacy and Inclusion

Are pupils supported to use AI safely and critically, with inclusion considered?

What it tests
Safeguards, literacy, age, need and access.
What the school needs to show
How safe, critical use is supported with age, need, access and inclusion considered.
DIMENSION 6

Leadership, Governance and Evidence

Can leaders and governors show ownership, decisions, actions and review dates?

What it tests
Accountability, oversight and the evidence trail.
What the school needs to show
Named accountability, governor oversight, recorded decisions, actions, evidence and review dates.

For MATs and school groups

One trust. A school-specific result for every school.

Schools in the same trust may use different tools, controls and starting points, so each completes its own assessment and gets its own result. The trust can buy centrally with one coordinated invoice and an optional consolidated trust view.

  1. Step 1: One assessment per school

  2. Step 2: One result per school

  3. Step 3: One central purchase

  4. Step 4: Optional consolidated view

Optional workforce development from Pro Apprenticeships

Practical AI development routes for different school roles.

AI Compass shows where capability needs attention. Pro Apprenticeships can discuss routes from an introduction through to role-based apprenticeships and leadership development.

Training is separate from the AI Compass purchase. Apprenticeship funding, employer contributions and eligibility depend on the learner, employer and current funding rules. Pro Apprenticeships will confirm the right route with the school or trust.

Official sources

The sources behind the governance context.

KCSIE 2026 applies from 1 September 2026. It points schools to government guidance on safe generative AI use and reinforces governors' and proprietors' role in online safety, filtering and monitoring.

Schools are not required to adopt AI, and Ofsted does not inspect AI as a standalone subject. Where AI is relevant, the question is whether leaders and governors can explain the current position, show decisions and evidence, and identify what still needs attention.

Give your leaders and governors a clear AI governance position to work from.

Explore for visibility, Enable for the recommended plan and evidence set, or Embed for a working governance framework. Results in days, not months.

Upgrade credit applies within the same academic year. Explore is £95 to 31 December 2026 and £125 from 1 January 2027.
